Update on the Driver CPC Reform – December 2023
Tuesday December 2023
Following a lengthy Consultation process the Department for Transport (DfT) only yesterday (Monday 11th December 2023) published an overview of the responses along with the Governments response.
The government has agreed Driver CPC will benefit from reforms to allow for more flexibility for renewing drivers. Various options have been discussed to achieve this, which are:
- to introduce a new periodic test as an alternative to 35 hours of training, for drivers looking to renew their Driver CPC
- reduce the minimum course length from 7 hours down to 3.5 hours
- decouple e-learning from trainer-led courses
- develop more core course content and encourage informal assessment
It is planned for the reformed training to be brought in through Secondary Legislation in the Summer of 2024, however this will not include the periodic testing route.
